Henry “Box” Brown

Henry brown, also known as Henry “Box” Brown was victim to slavery in America.Born in Louisa County,Virginia in 1815.When he turned 15 he was sent to a tobacco factory. He was forced to leave his family and children as he was not allowed to take a neighbouring plantation. In 1849 he decided to escape the tobacco factory after his family got sold to a wealthy person in North Carolina. To avoid captivity on the land near Richmond, Virginia, Henry “Box ” Brown in 1849 exploited maritime components of the Underground Railroad. Brown’’s nickname “ box ” was the result of his shoving himself into a Box and getting himself sent 250 miles from Richmond, Virginia to Toronto,Canada. The law stated that if that they caught a runaway slave, they would be put to death. When He had freedom, he became a well-known speaker for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and got to know Frederick Douglass. He was nicknamed “Box” at a Boston antislavery convention in May 1849, and thereafter used the name Henry Box Brown. He published two versions of his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown; the first, written with the help of Charles Stearns which was published in Boston in 1849.Henry Box Brown had inspired me to think outside of the box in hard times.
